Poor Attention to Detail

OpenSea’s commitment to quality does not appear to augment security, which is perhaps the most important aspect of the platform. In December 2021, the firm recruited the first-ever chief security officer. Previously, vice president for engineering Dan Roelker, who worked for DARPA’s cyberwarfare programme from 2011 to 2014, according to his LinkedIn page, was in charge of the platform’s security. In August 2021, Roelker joined the firm. Dawson claims that no one in specific was in charge of security while he worked at OpenSea in 2020. Speaking anonymously to avoid damaging possible business partnerships with OpenSea, a cryptocurrency specialist with an understanding of the company’s operations characterised OpenSea’s approach to cybersecurity as “years behind what needs to be done.” They attribute the platform’s inability to control NFT infringement to OpenSea’s choice to make NFT minting free and open for everyone.

A wave of digital theft had ravaged the OpenSea user community, with alleged fraudsters fleeing with $1.7 million in assets.
